Here, he details how 6 great artists \u00a0\u2014 Titian, Goya, Monet, Matisse, Nevelson and Edward Hopper \u2014 made old age a time of triumph by producing some of the greatest work of their long careers\u2014and, in some cases, changing the course of art history. Though these artists differed in many respects, they shared one thing: a determination to go on creating, driven not by the bounding energies of youth but by the ticking clock that would inspire them to produce some of their greatest masterpieces.

\nRichard Lacayo was a longtime writer and editor at\u00a0Time,\u00a0and from 2003 to 2016 the magazine\u2019s art and architecture critic.\u00a0He has also contributed articles on those subjects to\u00a0People,\u00a0Foreign Policy, and Graydon Carter\u2019s new online publication\u00a0Air Mail. He is the coauthor, with George Russell, of\u00a0Eyewitness: 150 Years of Photojournalism.
