Below you’ll find a sampling of outings that offer inspiration for the season.

For a summer hike, the Rockefeller State Park Preserve in Pocantico Hills is inspiring, as is The Old Croton Aqueduct Trail. Enjoy views from Untermeyer Gardens in Yonkers, or Tallman Mountain State Park in Piermont/Sparkill. Or, consider a day-long grounds past to enjoy the stunning landscape at Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown. You’ll find descriptions of 18 RiverWalks, trails and paths in the rivertowns in the new “Find Your Path” section of this website.

Explore the biking and walking path of the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. Cross the bridge (3.6 miles) and then head south to explore the village of Piermont, or north to Nyack and then Hook Mountain State Park. You can even download free Historic Hudson River Towns audio tours to accompany your bike ride or walk from the TravelStorys app.

Head indoors to cool off and enjoy cultural experiences including the Edward Hopper House Museum and Study Center in Nyack. The newly renovated and recently reopened Philipse Manor Hall in Yonkers is a must-see and is open 5 days per week. The hall dates back to the 1680’s. Today, Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site provides visitors with a balanced approach to interpreting the lives of Indigenous, European, and African people at PMH to understand the complex relationships that took place at the Manor from the earliest days of the Dutch Colony of New Netherland to the American Revolution and beyond.

Some of our other favorites? The Haverstraw Brick Museum with its fascinating history of the brickmaking industry that was so influential in the Rivertowns from the 1600’s to as late as the 1940’s. Hudson Valley MOCA, in Peekskill, presents compelling contemporary art in a 12,000 square foot exhibition and museum space.

When your day of activities is over, kick-back at one of the many waterfront restaurants in the river towns. In Westchester, consider the Seafire Grill in Yonkers, Half Moon in Dobbs Ferry, Harvest-on-Hudson in Hastings-on-Hudson, Red Hat on the River in Irvington, RiverMarket Bar and Kitchen in Tarrytown (just off the waterfront); Hudson Farmer and the Fish in Sleepy Hollow, 3 Westerly Bar & Grill in Ossining, or Fin and Brew in Peekskill.
