DESCRIPTION:The Taconic Opera summer program for emerging opera singers\, New York Opera Conservatory (NYOC)\, offers you an opportunity to hear the upcoming generation of professionally trained singers as they gain valuable experience perfecting their craft in a leading role. Established in 2018\, the NYOC helps to fill an unmet need among trained singers to gain hands-on experience through actual performance. \n  \nEach event in the series listed below – one tragedy and one comedy – will have a different cast\, making every performance completely unique from all the others!  Each performance includes the complete opera and is semi-staged (costumes\, props). \n  \nJuly Opera:  Un Ballo in Maschera (A Masked Ball) – Verdi \nWhat can happen when a king falls in love with the wife of one of his advisers?  What does he do when a fortune teller reveals that she loves him too?  Based on an actual event in Sweden\, come and watch his unraveling in a dramatic yet gently comedic way.  Since it’s Verdi\, expect some outstanding arias and ensembles. \n  \n  \nDates:  Wednesday\, July 9\, 7:00 pm \nFriday\, July 11\, 7:00 pm \nSunday\, July 13\, 3:00 pm \n  \nAugust Opera: La Cenerentola (Cinderella) – Rossini \nIn this dramatic variation of the fairy tale\, the Wicked Stepmother is replaced by a stepfather\, the Fairy Godmother is replaced by a philosopher and tutor to  Prince Charming\, and Cinderella is identified not by a glass slipper but by a silver ring.  It’s not the Disney story: the supernatural elements that traditionally characterize the Cinderella story were removed from Rossini’s libretto because they couldn’t be staged in his day. Harmon announced the purchase of the Van Cortlandt family farm\, where he intended to build “Harmon\, the New City\, the most important and extensive suburban development in the history of New York.” Village Historian Marc Cheshire will tell the story of how Harmon bought\, marketed and sold his “new city”\, and his colorful life as a wealthy playboy and internationally famous aviator.

SUMMARY:The Old Croton Aqueduct in Art
DESCRIPTION:When Cornelia Cotton opened an art gallery in Croton in 1979\, one of the earliest gallery shows was called “Croton Water”– the first time that prints\, maps\, and ephemera of the Old Croton Aqueduct were shown as an art exhibit. Cornelia was active on efforts to preserve the Aqueduct early on\, and after the Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct (FOCA) was founded she served on its board for many years. Her presentation will feature a wide variety of images of sites along the Aqueduct\, which is today the Old Croton Aqueduct State Historic Park—a linear park which runs from Van Cortlandt Park at the Bronx County/City of Yonkers border to the New Croton Dam in Cortlandt. \nThis event is sponsored by Croton Friends of History and will take place in the Ottinger Room of the Croton Free Library. SUMMARY:The Destruction of Riverside Avenue
DESCRIPTION:In September 1960 demolition began on Croton-on-Hudson’s waterfront business district to construct Route 9. Riverside Avenue\, from the intersection with Maple up to Farrington Road\, was rerouted and most of the old buildings demolished. By the time the project was completed\, parts of residential streets from Benedict Boulevard in Harmon up to Wolf Road were also eliminated\, along with the beautiful Beaux Arts-style bridge across the mouth of the Croton River. SUMMARY:Building the New Croton Dam
DESCRIPTION:By any measure\, the New Croton Dam is an engineering marvel. For 14 years (from 1892 to 1906) as many as 1\,000 workers used more than 500 pieces of heavy machinery\, 745\,000 barrels of cement\, 100\,000 tons of coal and an incalculable quantity of locally quarried stone to build the dam. It is said to be the third largest hand-hewn structure in the world after the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Great Wall of China. Village Historian Marc Cheshire will describe the construction process and the lasting impact the project had on the village.

SUMMARY:Croton Point Park: Westchester’s Jewel on the Hudson
DESCRIPTION:Croton Point Park encompasses miles of Hudson River shoreline with astonishing views and remnants of the region’s past. Ancient shell mounds shed light on the Indigenous peoples who inhabited the area for centuries\, prior to European colonization. Wine cellars from the first commercial vineyard in New York State are hidden in a hillside and discarded bricks from brickyards that helped build Manhattan are scattered on the shore. Although the point served as a dumping ground for much of the twentieth century\, local efforts have restored the park into a model of environmental conservation. Today\, bald eagles have returned to the delight of visitors\, who also explore the remarkable landmarks\, cruise the waters of the Hudson or enjoy scenic picnics. DESCRIPTION:The next Croton Free Library Book & Bake Sale will take place Saturday\, November 19th and Sunday\, November 20th from 10am-3pm (early bird admission will be from 8am-10am on Saturday for $10). As in years past\, the event will take place in the library’s Ottinger room. \nWe know this is a fun weekend for so many of our neighbors and friends\, and we look forward to seeing everyone discover great book\, music\, and DVD deals. Our sale is fit for all ages\, and items are listed at prices that cannot be beat – it is a perfect way to get in some early holiday shopping! \nFor this sale\, we will be having a Sunday Special option: from 12-3p on Sunday\, buy a Croton Free Library canvas bag for $20\, and fill it with items for free! We are happy to offer this deal and hope it is a way for folks to make the most of this wonderful event. \nWe will also have delicious homemade baked goods on sale (all safely wrapped) for you to enjoy after a successful shopping experience.
