DESCRIPTION:Come join us at the Tarrytown Music Hall\, known for its acoustical excellence. \n  \nCurrently celebrating its 28th Season and past recipient of the ArtsWestchester Organization of the Year Award\, Taconic Opera invites you to enjoy two piano concertos in one concert: Maurice Ravel’s incomparable Concerto for Left Hand in D Major\, and the world premiere of Dan Montez’s Piano Concerto #2 in D Minor. \n  \nBoth pieces will be performed on a concert grand by rising star\, Kessa Mefford\, along with the full Taconic Opera Orchestra conducted by the company’s Musical Director\, Jun Nakabayashi. For Mefford\, an award-winning pianist who specializes in the works of Ravel\, this concert will be the culmination of an eight-year project\, Whimsical Birdsong\, where she has publicly performed every work that includes piano by the composer. \n  \nIn addition to an extraordinary performance at the Music Hall in 2025\, other appearances include a 2022 historic Carnegie Hall debut featuring all of the composer’s art songs\, a special episode on WQXR radio’s Young Artists Showcase\, tours of libraries\, colleges and universities throughout the US offering both performances and lectures\, and being a featured artist with the Piatigorsky Foundation. She also offers Piano at Noon\, a monthly live performance at her studio in Peekskill. \n  \nDan Montez\, the General Director of Taconic Opera\, is an accomplished composer along with other music-related skills. In addition to concertos and sonatas\, he has written several oratorios\, art songs and an opera. Established in 2018\, the NYOC helps to fill an unmet need among trained singers to gain hands-on experience through actual performance. \n  \nEach event in the series listed below – one tragedy and one comedy – will have a different cast\, making every performance completely unique from all the others!  Each performance includes the complete opera and is semi-staged (costumes\, props). \n  \nJuly Opera:  Un Ballo in Maschera (A Masked Ball) – Verdi \nWhat can happen when a king falls in love with the wife of one of his advisers?  What does he do when a fortune teller reveals that she loves him too?  Based on an actual event in Sweden\, come and watch his unraveling in a dramatic yet gently comedic way.  Since it’s Verdi\, expect some outstanding arias and ensembles. \n  \n  \nDates:  Wednesday\, July 9\, 7:00 pm \nFriday\, July 11\, 7:00 pm \nSunday\, July 13\, 3:00 pm \n  \nAugust Opera: La Cenerentola (Cinderella) – Rossini \nIn this dramatic variation of the fairy tale\, the Wicked Stepmother is replaced by a stepfather\, the Fairy Godmother is replaced by a philosopher and tutor to  Prince Charming\, and Cinderella is identified not by a glass slipper but by a silver ring.  It’s not the Disney story: the supernatural elements that traditionally characterize the Cinderella story were removed from Rossini’s libretto because they couldn’t be staged in his day. Established in 2018\, the NYOC helps to fill an unmet need among trained singers to gain hands-on experience through actual performance. \nEach event in the series listed below – one tragedy and one comedy – will have a different cast\, making every performance completely unique from all the others!  Each performance includes the complete opera and is semi-staged (costumes\, props). \nJuly Opera:  Il Trovatore – Verdi \nVerdi’s turbulent tragedy is a mainstay of the operatic repertory. The score is both dark and energetic\, with infectious tunes that are not easily forgotten. Set in the turbulent Middle Ages\, the story is about a count seeking revenge for the murder of his brother by the gypsy girl Azucena\, who just happens to have raised the Count’s arch-enemy Manrico. This opera features the playful Anvil Chorus and the rousing tenor aria Di quella pira\, a favorite in concert performances by Pavarotti\, Domingo\, et al. Taconic Opera’s favorite hilarious mainstage buffo\, Jorge Ocasio\, joins the Conservatory’s young cast to sing the title role.
