SUMMARY:Old Croton Aqueduct Trail Hike with Rare Access Inside Abandoned Weir
DESCRIPTION:New York Adventure Club | www.AdventureClub.com\nDid you know that some of New York State’s most impressive modern marvels are only a 45 minute train ride north of NYC?\nJoin New York Adventure Club for a five-mile guided hike\, tour\, and exploration through the historic remnants of the Old Croton Aqueduct \, New York City’s first water supply system built between 1837 and 1842.\nLed by Old Croton Aqueduct expert Kyle Sallee\, our easy trail hike from Croton-on-Hudson to Ossining will include:\n-A historical discussion around the Croton Dam\, highlighting the complex engineering and difficult labor that was required to build it.\n-An exploration of the New Croton Dam — completed in 1907\, the New Croton Dam replaced the Old Croton Dam at the beginning of the Croton Aqueduct; this dam is also believed to be the second-largest manmade limestone structure in the world\, behind the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt!\n-Stops along the trail to point out the aqueduct ventilators \, constructed to ventilate the aqueduct.\n– Rare access inside a weir \, or maintenance chamber\, that will give us a good look at the original aqueduct from the inside.\nThis relatively flat hike should take between 4-5 hours\, so please bring comfortable shoes\, water\, and snacks.\nFood\, drinks\, and restrooms can be found in the town of Ossining\, our final destination on the hike.\nKyle will be visiting a local eatery for some post-hike food and drinks\, so stick around afterward to debrief with your fellow adventurers!\nClick here to see pictures from one of our last visits to the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail!\n*Train transportation to Croton-Harmon Station\, and ~$5pp J&S taxi ride from Croton-Harmon Station to Croton Gorge Park\, are not included — please see below for more details.\n**This experience ends in Ossining\, NY and a ~10 minute walk from the train station\nItinerary:\n-10:50am — Meet at Croton Gorge Park\n-11:30am — Begin Exploration of Croton Dam\, from the base to the very top\n-12:30pm — Begin hike from Dam to Ossining\n-1:30pm — Snack break!\n-3:15pm — Weir exploration\n-3:30pm — Arrive in Ossining\, Hike Complete!\n*Actual times may vary\n\nTransportation\n*Please double check train departure times the day before as schedules can shift due to track work.\n**Please bring small bills (~$5 cash) for J&S taxi ride from Croton-Harmon Station to Croton Gorge Park (35 Yorktown Rd\, Croton-On-Hudson\, NY 10520)\nBy Public Transit: Take the Poughkeepsie Station bound Metro-North Express Train departing at 9:43am from Grand Central Terminal\, and disembark at the Croton-Harmon Station at 10:38am. If you miss that train\, you can hop on the 9:49am local Hudson Line train\, which gets into Croton-Harmon station at 10:58am.\nMetro-North tickets can now be purchased via your smartphone — click here for more details.\nTrains from Ossining depart for GCT roughly every 30 minutes.\nBy Car: Since our hike ends in Ossining (five miles from the starting point at Croton Gorge Park)\, we recommend that attendees traveling by car first park at Ossining Station (so your vehicle is where the tour concludes)\, take the Poughkeepsie Station bound Metro-North Train one stop to Croton-Harmon Station\, and then take a J&S cab or uber.\nFor those who have a means of backtracking to Croton Gorge Park by way of second vehicle or cab\, we recommend parking at Croton Gorge Park’s lower lot — the park fee is $5 for those with a Park Pass\, $10 without.
