SUMMARY:The History of Ossining
DESCRIPTION:The first incorporated village in Westchester\, Ossining is defined by a history of remarkable firsts: the county’s first newspaper\, first volunteer fire department\, first childcare facility\, and first official American casualty of World War I. \nOne of its most enduring symbols is the infamous Sing Sing Prison\, established in 1825. Although its presence has left an indelible mark on the village’s identity\, the prison remains just one chapter in Ossining’s rich and textured story. \nLocal authors Scott Craven and Caroline Ranald Curvan will reveal the rich history of this unique community\, the subject of their just-published book Ossining: A Brief History. \nThis free event is sponsored by Croton Friends of History.

DESCRIPTION:In 1905\, innovative real estate developer Clifford B. Harmon announced the purchase of the Van Cortlandt family farm\, where he intended to build “Harmon\, the New City\, the most important and extensive suburban development in the history of New York.” Village Historian Marc Cheshire will tell the story of how Harmon bought\, marketed and sold his “new city”\, and his colorful life as a wealthy playboy and internationally famous aviator.

SUMMARY:Croton’s Stone Houses
DESCRIPTION:The Stone Houses were constructed between 1900 and 1938 on land Elizabeth Stevenson inherited from her father. Except for the first one\, Wyndhurst\, all the houses were designed by Elizabeth and her son Harvey\, who once said his mother had “a unique obsession to plan and build.” Village Historian Marc Cheshire will take us behind the stone walls to see these remarkable homes—two of which are hidden from view—and to learn about some of the famous people who lived in them.

SUMMARY:The Old Croton Aqueduct in Art
DESCRIPTION:When Cornelia Cotton opened an art gallery in Croton in 1979\, one of the earliest gallery shows was called “Croton Water”– the first time that prints\, maps\, and ephemera of the Old Croton Aqueduct were shown as an art exhibit. Cornelia was active on efforts to preserve the Aqueduct early on\, and after the Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct (FOCA) was founded she served on its board for many years. Her presentation will feature a wide variety of images of sites along the Aqueduct\, which is today the Old Croton Aqueduct State Historic Park—a linear park which runs from Van Cortlandt Park at the Bronx County/City of Yonkers border to the New Croton Dam in Cortlandt. \nThis event is sponsored by Croton Friends of History and will take place in the Ottinger Room of the Croton Free Library. SUMMARY:The Mystery of Money Island
DESCRIPTION:Some people say Croton Point’s Money Island was the place where the infamous pirate\, Captain Kidd\, buried his fabled treasure. Some people say it was a huge funeral mound for Native Americans slain in a terrible battle. Some people are reluctant to even whisper the name because the place was haunted—a favorite retreat for witches from all the country ’round. So what was Money Island? Village Historian Marc Cheshire will tell the tale of Money Island and its sad fate. \nThis event is sponsored by Croton Friends of History and will take place in the Ottinger Room of the Croton Free Library. SUMMARY:The Destruction of Riverside Avenue
DESCRIPTION:In September 1960 demolition began on Croton-on-Hudson’s waterfront business district to construct Route 9. Riverside Avenue\, from the intersection with Maple up to Farrington Road\, was rerouted and most of the old buildings demolished. By the time the project was completed\, parts of residential streets from Benedict Boulevard in Harmon up to Wolf Road were also eliminated\, along with the beautiful Beaux Arts-style bridge across the mouth of the Croton River. Village Historian Marc Cheshire will recount the upheaval and loss from this seminal event in Croton’s history. \nThis event is sponsored by Croton Friends of History and will take place in the Ottinger Room of the Croton Free Library. \nCroton Friends of History is dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of Croton-on-Hudson and the Hudson Valley. For upcoming events see our website and follow us on Facebook. \n

SUMMARY:Bethel Cemetery & Croton’s Lost Cemeteries
DESCRIPTION:Cemeteries are a record of our nation’s past. There is a rich collection of history located on their grounds. Here in our village we are fortunate to have fantastic examples of period gravestones dating back to the 1700s. Bethel Cemetery is a most charming space\, located in the virtual center of our community\, surrounded by our schools\, library and neighborhoods. Residents pass by and through it on a daily basis making it a part of our village. Croton Village Historian Marc Cheshire will tell the story of Bethel Cemetery\, Croton’s lost Quaker Burying Ground and the Van Cortlandt family cemetery.
