SUMMARY:Vanilla Fudge at the Paramount
DESCRIPTION:Paramount Hudson Valley Theater\nPhone: (914) 739-0039\nE-Mail: boxoffice@paramounthudsonvalley.com\nWebsite: https://paramounthudsonvalley.com/events/vanilla-fudge/\nTickets/Registration: https://paramounthudsonvalley.showare.com/ordertickets.asp\nAdmission Fee: $35\, $42.50\, $49.50 \nInfluencing the likes of Led Zeppelin\, Deep Purple\, and Van Halen\, Vanilla Fudge has certainly secured a place in Rock n’ Roll history!\nIn the summer of 1967\, amongst the “sit ins”\, protest marches and “happenings”\, Vanilla Fudge released a remake of The Supremes “You Keep Me Hangin’ On”\, scored a top ten hit and never looked back. Charting five other tracks on the Billboard Top 100 over the next three years\, Vanilla Fudge were architects of a new musical style that included psychedelia\, rock\, soul music and gospel. They were\, and are masters of reinterpreting other artists hit songs\, and their effect on the soon to explode late 60’s “heavy metal” scene was undeniable. Their contribution and legacy remains intact\, and with a 50th year anniversary in 2017\, “The Fudge” as their devotees refer to them\, are hopeful for a nod by the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame!\nThe powerhouse vocals\, and keyboard flourishes of virtuoso organist Mark Stein\, along with the fluid guitar explosions of Vinnie Martell\, all anchored by arguably by one of the best rhythm sections in the history of rock music\, with the legendary Carmine Appice on drums and Pete Bremy on bass (filling in for the retired Tim Bogert)\, they create a sound so unique that it cannot be imitated. Your spirit will jettison right back to a “happening” in that magical summer of 1967\, and this “happening” needs to be felt live to truly be appreciated!

SUMMARY:International Jazz Day Concert in Ossining
DESCRIPTION:Website: https://bethanyarts.org/calendar/international-jazz-day-concert/\nTickets/Registration: https://bethanyarts.org/product/international-jazz-day-concert/\nAdmission Fee: $25.00 \nCelebrate International Jazz Day at Bethany Arts Community with a trio of renowned jazz artists featuring saxophonist Dan Blake\, pianist/accordionist Vitor Gonçalvez and percussionist Rogério Boccato. These three musical explorers will present an evening of music by legendary composer and visionary artist Hermeto Pascoal\, whose music truly embodies the universal spirit of jazz music. \nBeginning with a stint with Miles Davis in the 1970s\, Hermeto Pascoal rose to prominence beyond his native Brazil because of his unique compositions and idiosyncratic performance style\, which has been documented on numerous recordings and has influenced countless musicians around the world. Central to Hermeto’s musical vision is the concept of “som da aura” (sound of the aura)\, where any sound from nature – a farm animal\, a soccer announcer\, a waterfall\, a bird song – can become music. This sonic aura reveals the deep musicality that surrounds and unites us all. For International Jazz Day\, join this trio as they play to celebrate our human capacity to embrace the unknown and to experience interconnectedness through sound.

SUMMARY:Frida’s Flowers: Horticulture and Crowns
DESCRIPTION:A profusion of carefully curated flowers grew in the walled garden of La Casa Azul\, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera’s home in Mexico City. Frida wore some of their flowers to accent her flamboyant Tehuana hairdos and dresses. Flower crowns are symbolic in Mexican culture\, portraying the beauty of the country’s biodiversity and honoring its ancient indigenous culture. \nCelebrate the color and culture of Frida’s flowers with a special gallery tour at 1pm\, led by Timothy Tilghman\, horticulturist and Head Gardener of Untermyer Gardens Conservancy\, and Laura Vookles\, HRM Chair\, Curatorial Department. Together\, they discuss the science and symbolism of the flowers and foliage in the works on view\, including the lush tropical vegetation in Diego Rivera’s La ofrenda\, photographs on view in Frida Kahlo in Context\, and works in The World of Frida that pay homage to the Kahlo’s floral iconography. \nFollowing the tour\, join a hands-on workshop from 2–4pm\, presented in English and Spanish\, and create your own iconic flower crown from fresh flowers. \nEspañol ↗ \nImage: Karen Provost. My Frida\, 2017. There are references to her surroundings encountered on daily walks. \nARTIST \nLizz Ndoye continues her love affair with her doll “creatures” – soft\, fabric\, humanoid figures that she makes and installs in tandem with her large canvases and drawings to depict aspects of their doll culture and existence and ability to heal. \nPERFORMERS \nMara Mills\, Artistic Director\, STIE. NOTE: “For many years\, Brody\, Barkman\, and I have collaborated on a theater piece to go with the opening of her show at CERES gallery\, NYC. Scent work is a sport that helps nurture and develop scent skills in dogs. Breeders can ‘prove’ their line’s ability to do scent work by earning titles. It is a seriously popular and exciting sport for everyone who trains and competes with their dog. It is also super fun to watch! So join us and the event’s sponsor\, Albany Obedience Club\, as we host American Kennel Club Scent Trials at the Museum. \nThe scent work sport will take place inside and outside of the Museum building\, with as many as 80-90 teams competing during the event! Also during this event\, there will be a canine-inspired Scavenger Hunt in the Museum for kids. Free admission will be offered during the first day of the event (May 7th\, Saturday) from 10:00am – 12:00pm. Museum general admission resumes on day two of the event (May 8th\, Sunday). \nPLEASE NOTE: ONLY CANINES REGISTERED FOR THIS EVENT WILL BE ALLOWED ON THE GROUNDS. \nFree admission to the Museum and the scavenger hunt activity were made possible by a generous grant award from the Museum’s Super Saturdays sponsor: Hudson River Bank and Trust Co. The installation of Brody’s sculptures in Studio Theater in Exile audience brings performance and art into an intimate relationship.” \nARTIST AND PERFORMER \nBRODY: Brody started with clay sculpture; she moved to cement to create larger\, life-sized women. Both materials are from the earth and retained their earth tones; currently she is working in paper mache—still figurative but now with color and collaged image from her photography and from magazines and books. The forms are familiar\, but the addition of image and color adds a new dimension. And DramaturgeMara is a writer across many genres and a stage director for over 40 years. Her love is original work and interesting formats that break the rules of proscenium theater. With Livia Strauss\, President Hudson Valley MOCA\, Mara has collaborated for 16 years on image/word projects. Studio Theater in Exile is now housed at HV MOCA . NOTE: “For many years\, Brody\, Barkman\, and I have collaborated on a theater piece to go with the opening of her show at CERES gallery\, NYC. SUMMARY:Literature to Life Workshop: I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter
DESCRIPTION:Literature to Life (LTL) is a performance-based literacy program that presents professionally staged verbatim adaptations of American literary classics. In this workshop\, LTL explores aspects of Mexican culture and identity through the lens of the novel I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika Sanchez\, while responding directly to the portrayal of young Mexican girls enacting traditional roles in the Diego Rivera painting La ofrenda\, photographs of Frida Kahlo in Frida Kahlo in Context\, and a selection of works included in The World of Frida. \nThe workshop\, staged in the galleries\, will use tableaux vivants\, or living mural techniques\, to activate works of art and scenes from the book\, offering an opportunity to connect visual and literary art forms in a unique and interesting way. \nThe National Book Award finalist and New York Times Bestseller\, I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter focuses on Julia\, a teenager attempting to help put the pieces of her broken family back together after the tragic loss of her older sister\, Olga. The story focuses on how Julia experiences loss and ultimately finds herself amid the pressures\, expectations\, and stereotypes of growing up in a Mexican-American home. Kahlo was no stranger to grief\, having experienced multiple losses in her life from the time she was in a serious accident at the age of 18. She explored her grief through her art\, much as we explore grief through the novel. \nThe workshop features simultaneous interpretation in Spanish and ASL. Recommended for ages 14+. \nEspañol ↗ \nSupport provided by Art Bridges.
