SUMMARY:Dover String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Music welcomes the return of the excellent young Dover Quartet\, lauded by The New Yorker as both “exciting and accomplished.” The Wall Street Journal has described their playing as “masterly\, nuanced” with “gutsy and earthy sound\,” while the Santa Fe New Mexican has said that to hear them is to be in “string quartet nirvana.” Although violist Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt will leave the quartet at the end of August\, they have announced that they are “excited to share the news that the Dover Quartet has appointed Hezekiah Leung as its violist for a season-long appointment starting in September. You may know Hezekiah as a founding member of the Rolston String Quartet\, the first prize winner of the 2016 Banff International String Quartet Competition and the recipient of the 2018 Cleveland Quartet Award. Hezekiah’s excellent artistry and musicianship\, combined with his experience performing in an award-winning string quartet\, make him an excellent fit for this appointment. Joel\, Bryan\, and Camden are thrilled to begin performing with him.”\nThe quartet was nominated for the 2021 Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance for their recording of Robert Schumann’s string quartets.\nThe Dover Quartet has released three albums on Cedille Records: Tribute: Dover Quartet Plays Mozart\, Voices of Defiance\, and Beethoven Complete String Quartets\, Volume 1 – The Opus 18 Quartets.\nThis afternoon’s performance includes:\nJoseph Haydn\, Quartet in C Major\, Hob. III:77\, Op. 76\, No.3 (“Emperor”)\nAmy Beach\, Quartet for Strings (in one movement)\, Op.89\nFelix Mendelssohn\, Quartet in E-flat Major\, Op. 44\, No.3

SUMMARY:Joan Osborne w/ special guests Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams
DESCRIPTION:Touring in support of her tenth studio album\, the masterful Trouble and Strife\, Joan Osborne has issued a clarion call. With stunning vocals\, a diverse range of sonics\, and incisive lyrics\, this deeply engaging collection of new original songs is her response to “the crazy\, chaotic times we’re living in\,” she says\, and “a recognition of the important role music has to play in this moment. Music has a unique ability to re-energize people and allow us to continue to hang on to that sense of joy of being alive.”\nSince she broke through 25 years ago with the multi-platinum Relish and its touchstone mega-smash “One of Us\,” the seven-time Grammy nominee has never played it safe. Osborne has followed her restless musical heart\, exploring a diverse range of genres: pop rock\, soul\, R&B\, blues\, roots rock\, gospel\, funk\, and country – all of which can be heard on Trouble and Strife\, along with the Western side of C&W and a touch of glam and disco. “For a lot of the record\, we were going for a ‘70s AM radio vibe\,” says Osborne. As for the lyrics\, the songs “are the most political I’ve ever written\,”she conveys of her first album of originals since 2014’s confessional Love and Hate. Osborne also produced Trouble and Strife\, primarily recorded in her basement studio in Brooklyn and released on the label she founded in 1991\, Womanly Hips.\nMulti-instrumentalist\, singer-songwriter Larry Campbell and singer-guitarist Teresa Williams are frequent collaborators with Phil Lesh\, Levon Helm\, Little Feat\, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady\, brought to the stage the crackling creative energy of a decades-long offstage union.

SUMMARY:Tower of Power
DESCRIPTION:For over 50 years\, Tower of Power has delivered the best in funk and soul music.“We were a Soul band called The Motowns.” recalls Emilio Castillo. “Rocco was the bass player\, I was there\, and my brother was the drummer. I met “Doc” Kupka back in 1968\, and gave him an audition. He came in the band\, and we eventually changed our name to the Tower of Power.” The reason for the band name change was that they had a specific goal in mind.\nEast Bay Grease defined their sound and landed them with Warner Brothers. Bump City\, their 1972 debut for the label\, was a hit on both the Billboard 200 and the R&B Albums chart\, and netted them the hits “You’re Still A Young Man” and “Down to The Nightclub.” The 70s were a boom period with radio classics like “So Very Hard to Go” and “What Is Hip?\,” and the band continued to tour and record over the years. Castillo says their love of the stage is the same today as it was back in 1968.\n50 years later\, in 2018\, they returned to Oakland to celebrate their landmark 50th anniversary. Tower’s window-rattling grooves and raucous party spirit has been a balm for the soul throughout their half-century existence\, but the release of 50 Years of Funk & Soul: Live at the Fox Theater couldn’t have arrived at a better time.\nThe band has long since surpassed Castillo’s modest aspirations\, traveling the world\, enjoying hit singles on their own and backing legendary artists including Otis Redding\, Elton John\, Santana\, the Grateful Dead\, John Lee Hooker\, Aerosmith\, Bonnie Raitt\, and countless others. In the process they’ve defined an “Oakland soul” sound as instantly recognizable as those from Castillo’s hometown\, Detroit\, as well as inspirations like Memphis and Philadelphia.\nThe future of Tower of Power is set out to be vigorous and dynamic\, and will prove to be just that for fans around the world starved for the band’s groove just the way Tower of Power likes it!
