SUMMARY:Great Estates Garden Tours at Mount Gulian
DESCRIPTION:Mount Gulian Historic Site\, Beacon\, in cooperation with Dutchess Tourism\, invites visitors to explore its garden and unique horticultural history on Saturday\, June 15 & Sunday\, June 16.  Special tours of the garden will be given at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. \n  \nVisitors will learn about the garden’s origins\, evolution\, and notable gardeners\, including Mary Anna Verplanck\, who as a precocious eleven-year-old\, designed the original 1804 garden; James F. Brown\, an enslaved man who fled Maryland and worked as Mount Gulian’s master gardener; and Virginia Eliza Darby Verplanck whose literary contributions include two gardening books\, Every Day in My Garden and A Year in My Garden from the early 20th century. Learn tips\, tricks\, and techniques from the past that kept boxwood gardens green and glorious. Visitors will receive a complimentary copy of the garden’s 1912 map.  A short film about Mr. Brown\, “Cultivating Freedom: From Slave to Citizen” will be shown. \n  \nToday\, notable plantings in the garden include antique peonies\, roses and yuccas that were returned to Mount Gulian in 1995 by a Verplanck descendant who removed them from the site in the 1960’s. After carefully tending to them for thirty years at her home’s garden\, she learned of our plans to restore the garden and happily brought them home. \n  \nAdmission to this special tour is: $14 adults; $12 seniors; $8 youngsters (6-18 years). DESCRIPTION:Working with our partners at the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Preservation Society we are pleased to offer lighthouse tours. \nOur lighthouse tours are an opportunity to learn about the important role that the Hudson River played in the development of the upper Hudson River towns and the role that the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse plays in the safe navigation of river transportation. \nMore Information :  \n– For safety reasons\, we ask that visitors wear sturdy shoes (not flip flops or high heels) \n– Picnic tables are available if you wish to bring a lunch. There are public restrooms in Henry Hudson Riverfront Park. A composting toilet is available at the lighthouse. \n– Souvenirs are available. (Cash\, check preferred.) ATM at nearby Amtrak station in Hudson. DESCRIPTION:The Stone Houses were constructed between 1900 and 1938 on land Elizabeth Stevenson inherited from her father. Except for the first one\, Wyndhurst\, all the houses were designed by Elizabeth and her son Harvey\, who once said his mother had “a unique obsession to plan and build.” Village Historian Marc Cheshire will take us behind the stone walls to see these remarkable homes—two of which are hidden from view—and to learn about some of the famous people who lived in them.

SUMMARY:The Old Croton Aqueduct in Art
DESCRIPTION:When Cornelia Cotton opened an art gallery in Croton in 1979\, one of the earliest gallery shows was called “Croton Water”– the first time that prints\, maps\, and ephemera of the Old Croton Aqueduct were shown as an art exhibit. Cornelia was active on efforts to preserve the Aqueduct early on\, and after the Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct (FOCA) was founded she served on its board for many years. Her presentation will feature a wide variety of images of sites along the Aqueduct\, which is today the Old Croton Aqueduct State Historic Park—a linear park which runs from Van Cortlandt Park at the Bronx County/City of Yonkers border to the New Croton Dam in Cortlandt. \nThis event is sponsored by Croton Friends of History and will take place in the Ottinger Room of the Croton Free Library. SUMMARY:The Destruction of Riverside Avenue
DESCRIPTION:In September 1960 demolition began on Croton-on-Hudson’s waterfront business district to construct Route 9. Riverside Avenue\, from the intersection with Maple up to Farrington Road\, was rerouted and most of the old buildings demolished. By the time the project was completed\, parts of residential streets from Benedict Boulevard in Harmon up to Wolf Road were also eliminated\, along with the beautiful Beaux Arts-style bridge across the mouth of the Croton River. Village Historian Marc Cheshire will recount the upheaval and loss from this seminal event in Croton’s history. \nThis event is sponsored by Croton Friends of History and will take place in the Ottinger Room of the Croton Free Library. \nCroton Friends of History is dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of Croton-on-Hudson and the Hudson Valley. SUMMARY:Building the New Croton Dam
DESCRIPTION:By any measure\, the New Croton Dam is an engineering marvel. For 14 years (from 1892 to 1906) as many as 1\,000 workers used more than 500 pieces of heavy machinery\, 745\,000 barrels of cement\, 100\,000 tons of coal and an incalculable quantity of locally quarried stone to build the dam. It is said to be the third largest hand-hewn structure in the world after the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Great Wall of China. Village Historian Marc Cheshire will describe the construction process and the lasting impact the project had on the village.

DESCRIPTION:Using rare photographs and postcards from the Croton Historical Society and other sources\, Village Historian Marc Cheshire will take us on a tour of Croton at the dawn of the 20th century. See familiar streets and buildings as they looked more than 100 years ago and discover long-lost treasures like Croton’s first train station\, the barn at Van Cortlandt Manor\, Gardiner estate on Hessian Hill\, and much more. \nThursday\, April 13\, 7 p.m. at the Croton Free Library\, Ottinger Room.

RW250 is working to commemorate the upcoming 250th anniversary in 2026 by building awareness of the events\, places\, ideas\, and people — both the unsung and the famous — of the Revolutionary War in Westchester. DESCRIPTION:Join Jill Kiefer\, Ph.D. as she leads her Online Course series for BAC entitled: “Post-Impressionism In Its Own Right” for 6 Tuesdays\, 02/21-03/28\, 2023 from 10 – 11 AM. \nDiscussions of Post-Impressionism are often limited to its relationship with Impressionism. But this diverse and distinctive movement stands very much on its own—having traveled quite different paths than those explored by the Impressionists. Indeed\, Post-Impressionism embraced the past\, the present\, and the future—and its influence remains a force today. \nIn this program\, we’ll focus on the key Post-Impressionists (Seurat\, Cézanne\, Van Gogh and Gauguin) to examine their unique achievements. Which ones most avidly pursued symbolic and subjective meanings in their art? How and why did structure\, optics and order become the obsession of others? In what ways did their combined efforts and aesthetic visions define what would become the modern idiom? Join us as we seek the answers to these questions\, and identify how Post-Impressionism fits into the broad tapestry that is art history.
