SUMMARY:WHAT HAPPENED TO JACKSON AVENUE: A Story of Urban Renewal
DESCRIPTION:Phoenix Theatre Ensemble\nin collaboration with\nRivertown Films\npresents\nWHAT HAPPENED TO JACKSON AVENUE\nA Story of Urban Renewal\nA Documentary Film by Hakima Alem and Rudi Gohl\nIn the summer of 2019 Clara Francesca\, Elise Stone\, and Craig Smith from\nPhoenix Theatre Ensemble were meeting with Bill Batson\, Nyack community\nleader\, historian\, and activist\, outside in the Nyack parking lot next to\nMain Street planning the Nyack performing arts festival. At one point Bill\nstanding in some empty parking spaces said\, “This was Jackson Avenue\, our\nfamily house stood here” – thus began a 2-year journey leading to this\npowerful documentary film about the urban renewal program in 1960’s Nyack.\n“What Happened to Jackson Avenue\, a story of urban renewal” covers an urban\nrenewal program that removed 125 families (79% Black). These families lost\ntheir homes\, families\, community and generational wealth. The film includes\npersonal and emotional stories from individuals who were present and saw\nthe destruction of their community\, some of whom are now in their 80s and\n90s and want to be heard.\nThis screening will be followed by a panel discussion.\nJune 24\, 2023 @8pm http://twitter.com/8pm\nJuly 7. 2023 @8pm http://twitter.com/8pm\nThe Nyack Center at 58 Depew (Broadway and Depew Avenue) Nyack\, NY

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Richard Lacayo\, “Last Light: How Six Great Artists Made Old Age a Time of Triumph”
DESCRIPTION:Come here Richard Lacayo\,–one of the nation’s top art critics– talk about his new book ‘Last Light” (Simon & Schuster\, Nov. 2022). Here\, he details how 6 great artists  — Titian\, Goya\, Monet\, Matisse\, Nevelson and Edward Hopper — made old age a time of triumph by producing some of the greatest work of their long careers—and\, in some cases\, changing the course of art history. Though these artists differed in many respects\, they shared one thing: a determination to go on creating\, driven not by the bounding energies of youth but by the ticking clock that would inspire them to produce some of their greatest masterpieces.\nLecture: FREE\nBook: $35.00 plus tax\nRegistrants are invited to visit Edward Hopper House Museum and the exhibition Ellsworth Kelly: “State of the River” following the lecture between 3-5pm.\nFor more information about the book is available here(https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Last-Light/Richard-Lacayo/9781501146589)\nAbout Ricard Lacayo\nRichard Lacayo was a longtime writer and editor at Time\, and from 2003 to 2016 the magazine’s art and architecture critic. He has also contributed articles on those subjects to People\, Foreign Policy\, and Graydon Carter’s new online publication Air Mail. He is the coauthor\, with George Russell\, of Eyewitness: 150 Years of Photojournalism. In 2013\, he delivered one of the annual Clarice Smith Lectures at the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, on artists in old age.
