DESCRIPTION:Kibbitz & Nosh: New York City’s Vanishing Cafeterias\nPhotographs by Marcia Bricker Halperin\nDuring the early to mid-20th Century\, the streets of New York City were filled with hundreds of cafeterias\, and self-service eating establishments. One particular restaurant\, Dubrow’s Cafeteria in Brooklyn\, was a legendary institution. During his travels\, EO is both\nhelped and hindered by a cast of characters including a young Italian\npriest (Lorenzo Zurzolo)\, a Countess (Isabelle Huppert)\, and a rowdy Polish\nsoccer team. EO puts the viewer in the heart and mind of its four-legged\nprotagonist. Remarkable…no movie that I’ve seen this year has\nmoved me as deeply\, made me feel as optimistic about cinema or engaged me\nwith such intellectual vigor.”\nARTFORUM\, Amy Taubin\n“One of the greatest films I’ve ever seen. Skolimowski has made a film that\nin its delicacy and grandeur is in a class by itself.”\nTIME\, Stephanie Zacharek\n“There is no more beautiful-looking film this year…EO may be one of the\ngreatest movies ever made about the spirit of animals\, as much as we can\nknow it.”\nLOS ANGELES TIMES\, Justin Chang\n“Brilliant…this could be the year’s most breathtakingly beautiful movie.”\nNPR’s Fresh Air\, John Powers\n“EO is a thrillingly imaginative piece of filmmaking. SUMMARY:LAS ABOGADAS: Attorneys on the Front Lines of the Migrant Crisis
DESCRIPTION:LAS ABOGADAS: Attorneys on the Front Lines of the Migrant Crisis – a benefit to pay for the new 16′ screen!\nShowing: Thursday\, May 25\, 7:30 PM\nTitle: Las Abogadas: Attorneys on the Front Lines of the Migrant Crisis\nYear: 2022\nCountry: USA\nGenre: Documentary\nDirector: Victoria Bruce\nFor a group of extraordinary women who practice immigration law\, the refugee crisis is a call to action they can’t ignore.\nLAS ABOGADAS follows a group of immigration attorneys over a multi-year odyssey as the U.S. Government under President Trump upends every law meant to protect those fleeing from persecution\, violence and war. USA\, 2022\, 60 minutes.\nDoors open at 7:30 with the 9 piece Afro-Brazilian and World Music band\, Rosario featuring T.E.N.S. Las Abogadas will screen at 8:00\, followed by recent immigrants to our community telling their stories\, and ending with another performance by Rosario featuring T.E.N.S.\nGrowing up in an immigrant family Humberto Rosario learned to navigate the complexities of cultural identiry through rhythm and rhyme. “Te Encontro no Samba” (T.E.N.S.) is a dynamic Afro-Brazilian music project founded in 2017. What began as a small “roda de Samba” performance group has now evolved into explorations of other sounds of the African diaspora.\nIf you have been in The Nyack Center in the last year you are no doubt aware that the screen that was installed in 2005 had come to the end of its days – and maybe you heard us say that a new screen and rolling mechanism would cost $13\,000 (which ultimately became $16\,000). The Nyack Center did purchase a beautiful new screen that Rivertown Film is helping pay for\, and we need to do that without jeopardizing the ongoing programs of Rivertown Film or those of the Nyack Center\, whose services support – among others – immigrant communities such as those shown in Las Abogadas.\n  \nPLEASE HELP US. The screen at the Nyack Center is a community resource unlike anything that can be found in Rockland County. This is a special circumstance\, and WE NEED THOSE OF YOU WHO UNDERSTAND WHAT A UNIQUE RECOURCE THIS IS to help us pay for it\, URGENTLY! Purchase a ticket\, take part in our raffle\, make a donation to our screen fund or become a sponsor.\nFrom setting up a legal clinic in a Volkswagen bus in the middle of five thousand desperate migrants\, to forcing border guards to follow the law and accept a blind woman into U.S. custody\, to crossing the border to counsel African migrants stuck in Tijuana\, to standing up to human traffickers in a makeshift refugee camp along the Mexican side of the border\, to giving legal advice in the brutally hot Mexican sun to families desperate to see American soil — we watch our Las Abogadas characters’ surreal journeys to try and help.\nIn their own narration\, we hear how each woman came to do the work they do. With archival footage we see their own personal stories of migration and their desire to give others the same opportunities.\nBest of Women’s Voices – Portland Film Festival\nBest Documentary – L.A. Independet Women Film Awards\nBest Documentary – Vancouver Women in Film\nBest Feature – Vancouver Women in Film\nCamera Eye International Award – 6th Annual Women Filmmakers Festival\nBest Documentary – ONE Country\, ONE Film International Film Festival\nBest Documentary – Awareness Festival\nBest Social Justice Documentary – Queen City Film Festival\nBest Documentary – Pembroke Taporelli Arts and Film Festival\nBest in Fest – Valkyrie International Film Festival

SUMMARY:June Latin Lounge with Flamenco with Romero
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Mz. Valentine\, June’s Latin Lounge will showcase the return of flamenco with Romero!\nThis Latin Lounge will showcase singer and flamenco fusion guitarist Romero accompanied by Manuel Carro on vocals and percussion and noted Spanish flamenco dancer Elisabet Torras. Their last shows with us got raves and sold out fast — do not miss this one!\nRomero is a virtuoso guitarist/composer. Born of a musical family\, his mother is Grammy award winning artist Estela Raval. Romero started working early with some of world’s finest guitarists. His fiery guitar and sensual compositions are flavored with Latin and flamenco strains.\nRomero’s compositions for Live at Trinity Church present intense and evocative music complimented by a lyrical style which is sure to influence aspiring guitarists for generations to come. The impassioned strains of Romero’s virtuosity\, both as a guitarist and composer\, offer listeners a vibrant and exhilarating sound.\nRomero’s Un Segundo Una Vida brought his flamenco and Latin-based jazz to new realms with the addition of more complex orchestration and additional instrumentation; including the melodic strings of a chamber orchestra\, and a wide array of penetrating vocals. Romero’s CD\, Duende\, hit number 6 on the Billboard charts (World Music).\nwww.hernanromeromusic.com\n********\nWe have two dinner seatings upstairs with the concert:\nDoors open at 5pm first come first served\n6pm (arrive by 5:30) and 8pm (arrive by 7:30)\nPlease arrive promptly. SUMMARY:Hamlet
DESCRIPTION:Elmwood’s Public Domain Players Presents Shakespeare’s Masterpiece\, Hamlet.\nOn July 29\, 2023\, at 3:00 p.m. on ZOOM\nThis famous play is being shortened by using much (but not all) of the text from the First Quarto of Hamlet\, first published in 1603\, rather than a combination of the Second Quarto and the First Folio\, published in 1623\, which is the version that is conventionally used (and is four hours long\, if uncut). The First Quarto\, as well as shortening the text\, also introduces new connections between the characters\, such as Gertrude and Hamlet working together against Claudius. So even if you think you know Hamlet\, tune in for this version that will help you see the play through a new lens.\nContact readings@elmwoodplayhouse.com mailto:readings@elmwoodplayhouse.com for the link.
