DESCRIPTION:Kibbitz & Nosh: New York City’s Vanishing Cafeterias\nPhotographs by Marcia Bricker Halperin\nDuring the early to mid-20th Century\, the streets of New York City were filled with hundreds of cafeterias\, and self-service eating establishments. One particular restaurant\, Dubrow’s Cafeteria in Brooklyn\, was a legendary institution. SUMMARY:June Latin Lounge with Flamenco with Romero
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Mz. Valentine\, June’s Latin Lounge will showcase the return of flamenco with Romero!\nThis Latin Lounge will showcase singer and flamenco fusion guitarist Romero accompanied by Manuel Carro on vocals and percussion and noted Spanish flamenco dancer Elisabet Torras. Their last shows with us got raves and sold out fast — do not miss this one!\nRomero is a virtuoso guitarist/composer. Born of a musical family\, his mother is Grammy award winning artist Estela Raval. Romero started working early with some of world’s finest guitarists. His fiery guitar and sensual compositions are flavored with Latin and flamenco strains.\nRomero’s compositions for Live at Trinity Church present intense and evocative music complimented by a lyrical style which is sure to influence aspiring guitarists for generations to come. The impassioned strains of Romero’s virtuosity\, both as a guitarist and composer\, offer listeners a vibrant and exhilarating sound.\nRomero’s Un Segundo Una Vida brought his flamenco and Latin-based jazz to new realms with the addition of more complex orchestration and additional instrumentation; including the melodic strings of a chamber orchestra\, and a wide array of penetrating vocals. Romero’s CD\, Duende\, hit number 6 on the Billboard charts (World Music).\nwww.hernanromeromusic.com\n********\nWe have two dinner seatings upstairs with the concert:\nDoors open at 5pm first come first served\n6pm (arrive by 5:30) and 8pm (arrive by 7:30)\nPlease arrive promptly. Seating is first come first served. Roost will be offering a delicious seasonal menu with the concert ($25 minimum per person at tables)\nWe recommend purchasing tickets at least 48 hours in advance.\nFor those who do not wish to dine\, a limited number of tickets will be sold at the door payable by cash or Venmo only. A table is not guaranteed with these tickets.\nEntrance to the concert is through the door on the LEFT\nNOTE: Concerts take place on the second floor. Roost and Union Arts Center are located in a one-hundred-year-old restored firehouse without an elevator.\nFor more information\, call 914-488-4698

SUMMARY:Hamlet
DESCRIPTION:Elmwood’s Public Domain Players Presents Shakespeare’s Masterpiece\, Hamlet.\nOn July 29\, 2023\, at 3:00 p.m. on ZOOM\nThis famous play is being shortened by using much (but not all) of the text from the First Quarto of Hamlet\, first published in 1603\, rather than a combination of the Second Quarto and the First Folio\, published in 1623\, which is the version that is conventionally used (and is four hours long\, if uncut). The First Quarto\, as well as shortening the text\, also introduces new connections between the characters\, such as Gertrude and Hamlet working together against Claudius. So even if you think you know Hamlet\, tune in for this version that will help you see the play through a new lens.\nContact readings@elmwoodplayhouse.com mailto:readings@elmwoodplayhouse.com for the link.

SUMMARY:August Poetry Slam @ X House in Nyack
DESCRIPTION:We have a monthly poetry slam the first Saturday of each month at X House in Nyack.\nWhat’s a poetry slam? It’s a performance poetry competition judged by the audience. We use anonymous whole-room voting\, so everybody in the audience gets to decide how the slam goes.\nIf you want to complete in the slam\, bring at least 3 original poems\, each of duration 5 minutes or less. If you want to read in the open mic\, bring up to 5 minutes of whatever you feel like sharing.\nWe are currently requiring masks to show our immune compromised or otherwise high risk friends that we care about them and we want them to included. N95 and KN95 masks will be freely available at the door\, with both ear loop and head strap options.\nWorkshop (6:30 – 7:28)\nBryan\, one of our organizers\, is leading a free editing workshop before the slam. If you have a piece you want feedback on\, bring it.\nSign-ups (7:30 – 8:00)\nSign-ups for both the open mic and the slam will be open from 7:30 PM – 8:00 PM. Admission is $10 general; $5 for students\, seniors\, and anyone who can’t afford $10 right now.\nOpen Mic and Slam (8:03 – 10:00)\nThe event starts with a short open mic. Any number of people can sign up to read in the open mic; we will randomly select 4 of them to share five minutes of whatever they feel like sharing.\nAfter the open mic is our poetry slam. Any number of people can sign up for the slam; we will randomly select 8 of them to compete in it. The slam is 3 rounds. Poets will perform 1 original poem\, 5 minutes or shorter\, each round.\nThe whole audience will anonymously vote at the end of each round. Poets with the fewest votes will be eliminated. Poets with the most votes will advance to the next round.\nThe poet that has the most votes after the third round wins the slam and $75. Second place wins $50. Third place wins $25.\nCART captioning is available with sufficient advance notice.\nYou can contact us with any questions at rocklandpoets@gmail.com mailto:rocklandpoets@gmail.com\nSlam format/rules at https://www.rocklandpoets.org/slam-format-rules
