SUMMARY:Film Screening: SUMMER OF SOUL
DESCRIPTION:SUMMER OF SOUL\, presented by Garner Arts Center and Rivertown Film \nShowing: Saturday\, August 6\, 8:00 PM\nTitle: Summer of Soul\nYear: 2021\nCountry: USA Genre: Documentary\,Music\nDirector: Amhir Thompson \nView Trailer \nPurchase Tickets Now \nSummer of Soul (… Or\, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised) is a feature documentary about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival\, directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson\, drummer for The Roots and bandleader for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. USA\, 2021\, 118 minutes\, documentary. \nThis film marks Thompson’s feature directorial debut and focuses on the outdoor festival in Harlem’s Mount Morris Park that took place the same summer as the famed Woodstock festival and boasted an attendance on par with that concert 100 miles away. It featured dozens of extraordinary performances by artists including Stevie Wonder\, Sly and the Family Stone\, Nina Simone\, B.B. King\, the Staple Singers\, the 5th Dimension\, David Ruffin\, Mahalia Jackson and Gladys Knight and the Pips. Over 300\,000 people attended\, yet it received virtually no coverage from the mainstream media. The 40 hours of never-seen-before footage was originally shot by the late television pioneer Hal Tulchin\, but has largely remained in storage for the past 50 years\, keeping this incredible event in America’s history lost – until last year. \nTickets on sale HERE. $10 general admission. $8 for members and tenants of Garner Arts Center\, seniors\, students\, veterans\, and members of Rivertown Film (Rivertown members\, use the discount code RIVMEM). \nWinner of the 2022 Academy Award for Documentary Film\, a Grammy for Best Music Film\, a Peabody Arts Award\, a BAFTA Award for Best Documetary\, an Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary\, the Sundance Grand Jury Prize\, and was named Best Documentary of 2021 by the National Board of Review. \n“Watching Summer of Soul\, what you experience is nothing less than the sound of freedom.” – Variety \n“Best Film of the Year” – The New York Times \n“Summer of Soul is both a tribute to the artists and\, just as importantly\, their audience — which is what makes it not just a great concert film but a great documentary\, period.” – Rolling Stone \n“Some of the performances are breathtaking\, and all of them are valuable\, like the political and social context that surrounds them.” – Wall Street Journal

SUMMARY:MUSIC AT SUGAR POND
DESCRIPTION:MUSIC AT SUGAR POND\, a new concert series featuring International Recording Artist \nAnnie Sumi with Hastings’ own Adam Hart opening. Adam will perform a set for kids big and small. \nFriday\, August 12th from 6:00 – 8:00 PM \nSugar Pond is an actual pond adjacent to Hillside Elementary School. \n  \nAlthough admission to the park is free\, your donations are graciously accepted. We ask that you donate $20 per family. Performers will receive 90% of the donations and the rest will cover production costs. Any remaining funds will be given to the Conservation Commission to support restoration efforts in Hastings-on-Hudson. \n  \nAnnie Sumi is an ethereal-folk artist from Canada. Her music is intimate and expansive\, inviting the listener into a familiar otherworld. Inspired by the mirrored relationship between physical and emotional landscapes\, Annie’s music speaks of the human experience through the language of the senses. She has been nominated as ‘Emerging Artist’\, ‘Female Vocalist\,’ and ‘Songwriter of the Year\,’ and her music is played on national (US and Canada) and international radio. It’s not just the beauty of her voice and her music\, not just the charm of her onstage presence that makes her something special. It’s the way she shows you the world in a new light. \n  \n“Listening to Annie Sumi in concert is like taking a musical forest bath” – Carter Smith of Common Ground Concerts. \n  \n“Annie articulates her love of nature and humankind\, and it comes through in each and every note.” – Kathy Sands-Boehmer\, Harbortown Music \n  \nThe concert is produced by Protect Our Woods\, a volunteer entity created to inform the community about restoration efforts in Hillside Woods and to educate the public about our local ecosystem. \n  \nFor more info about Hillside Wood’s preservation efforts\, visit Protect Our Woods’ Hastings Green website\, our Facebook page\, or email protectourwoods@gmail.com. You can read about the Hastings-on-Hudson Conservation Commission’s additional ecosystem restoration projects around the Village HERE. \n  \nProduced in association with Peter Shafran and RIVER SPIRIT MUSIC\, LLC \n  \nCLICK HERE FOR HASTINGS/HILLSIDE TRAIL MAP \n  \n

SUMMARY:Concert in the Park
DESCRIPTION:Hollis Brown’s latest album\, In The Aftermath (Mascot Label Group/Cool Green Recordings)\, is the deliciously depraved outcome of an all-night rock n’ roll riot. The Queens\, New York-based quintet escaped to the Poconos to record with a few handles of whiskey\, and\, in one 24-hour session\, ran down the Stone’s seminal first album of all originals\, 1966’s Aftermath. Tracked live in the studio with minimal overdubs\, In The Aftermath is potent proof the five-piece group is one of the last great American rock n’ roll bands. \n“IIn The Aftermath is the second in a casual homage series. Previously\, Hollis Brown issued\, Gets Loaded\, saluting Velvet Underground’s Loaded. This new album directly follows the band’s most successful release yet\, 2019’s Ozone Park\, which earned rave reviews from Rolling Stone\, Billboard\, Paste Magazine\, Pop Matters\, Relix\, and Goldmine. \nHollis Brown formed in 2009\, in Queens\, New York\, and came together around best buds\, singer-guitarist Mike Montali and lead guitarist Jonathan Bonilla. The guys pinched the band name from the Bob Dylan song\, “Ballad of Hollis Brown\,” and its moniker neatly epitomizes the group’s commitment to melding a signature Americana blend with fine songcraft. These days the band is rounded out by Andrew Zehnal (drums) and Chris Urriola (bass). To date\, Hollis Brown has released an EP\, three original albums\, and the aforementioned Record Store Day tribute to the Velvet Underground’s Loaded album. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBruce T. Carroll\nWith the release of First Bird To Sing\,  Bruce T Carroll has continued to carve out a niche for himself as an Americana artist with a social conscience and a deft lyrical touch. \nHe spent fourteen years (1999-2013) operating the legendary Larchmont\, NY music venue The Watercolor Café\, where he presented regional and national acts of as well as new and undiscovered acts that soon broke upon the national scene. While presenting great music in a beautiful club setting was a labor of love for Bruce\, it often kept him from pursuing his first love and overriding passion: lyric songwriting. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCONCERT AT LANZA FIELD AT HARBOR ISLAND PARK BY THE BEACH. \nFree Concert – No reservations/tickets needed | Food Trucks On-Site – Bring your own seats/food/drinks | Free parking at Harbor Island Park after 4:30 pm on concert days |  Rain Date – Thu\, Aug 18 @ 7pm

SUMMARY:Virgin Blacktop: A New York Skate Odyssey – FREE Film in the Park
DESCRIPTION:Virgin Blacktop: A New York Skate Odyssey – FREE in Memorial Park\, Nyack\n\n\n\nShowing: Friday\, August 19\, 8:00 PM\nTitle: Virgin Blacktop: A New York Skate Odyssey\nYear: 2019\nCountry: USA\nGenre: Documentary\,Meet the Filmmaker\nDirector: Charlie SamuelsView Trailer\n\n\n\n\n\n“VIRGIN BLACKTOP: A New York Skate Odyssey” is an uplifting and sometimes heart-breaking coming-of-age story about a funky crew of suburban New York City kids. To be specific\, they were Rockland kids. When they met in 1977\, they had nothing in common except a passion for skateboarding. Despite their vastly different ages\, races and economic backgrounds and with their parents hands-off approach\, they formed a competitive\, traveling team of spirited outsiders called the “Wizards”. Now\, nearly 40 years later\, they remain lifelong friends but their lives have followed very different paths\, from boardrooms to jail cells. Virgin Blacktop: A New York Skate Odyssey is an uplifting character-driven story about boys skating across boundaries to become men. \nNyack Village Trustee Donna Lightfoot Cooper will welcome the audience and introduce filmmaker Charlie Samuels  and other Wizards who are present before the film. \nPlaying for free in Memorial Park\, next to the river and under the stars\, starting at 8:00 PM on Friday\, August 19. Rain date\, Saturday\, August 20. Bring your own blanket\, or better yet\, lawn chairs. \nPresented by Rivertown Film with VIRGIN BLACKTOP and Nyack Film Festival\, with thanks to important funding from friends of Visit Nyack. \nOur Community Partners include for this free screening include: The Village of Nyack\, Nyack Chamber of Commerce\, Visit Nyack\, ACADA\, The Nyack Center\, Nyack Merchants United\, and Nyack NAACP. \nA discussion with filmmaker Charlie Samuels and members of the Wizards will be held on Zoom\, on Tuesday\, August 23\, at 6:00 PM. Registration (name and email) is required HERE \n“Virgin Blacktop explores the lives of Samuels’ diverse skater crew that met in Rockland in 1977. ‘It’s been almost 40 years since we named ourselves the Wizards – we placed in State and National competitions and one of us went on to be the first pro skater in New York City. Now we are fathers and husbands and our lives have spun off in different directions\, but we’ve stayed passionate about the sub-culture of skating.’” – Bill Batson\, Nyack News and Views (2018) \n“The footage of The Wizards at exhibitions and competitions is a time capsule of long-lost Rockland:  There they are in front of Bamberger’s in Paramus\, New Jersey; at the Nanuet Theater-Go-Round\, riding up a wooden ramp they had transported to the site on the roof of a car; slaloming down the hill on Nyack’s Remsen Street\, with the Tappan Zee Playhouse as a backdrop. When they formed in 1977\, The Wizards were: Nyack’s Kermit Taylor (who later changed his name to Jamaal Bey)\, Stephon White\, and Umberto Brownlee; South Nyack’s Joe Humeres; Grand View’s Chris Kinzel and Jonathan Bell; Upper Grand View’s Ramsay Lewis; and Sparkill’s Samuels. Bell was 16; White and Samuels 15; Bey and Kinzel were 14; Lewis and Brownlee 12; Humeres 11. Before long\, the towheaded Michael Offen\, of Upper Nyack\, whom Samuels used to babysit\, was allowed to join. He was\, Samuels says\, ‘the best 7-year-old skater on the East Coast.’” – Peter D. Kramer\, The Journal News (2018)
