SUMMARY:Post-Impressionism In Its Own Right: Online Class
DESCRIPTION:Join Jill Kiefer\, Ph.D. as she leads her Online Course series for BAC entitled: “Post-Impressionism In Its Own Right” for 6 Tuesdays\, 02/21-03/28\, 2023 from 10 – 11 AM. \nDiscussions of Post-Impressionism are often limited to its relationship with Impressionism. But this diverse and distinctive movement stands very much on its own—having traveled quite different paths than those explored by the Impressionists. Indeed\, Post-Impressionism embraced the past\, the present\, and the future—and its influence remains a force today. \nIn this program\, we’ll focus on the key Post-Impressionists (Seurat\, Cézanne\, Van Gogh and Gauguin) to examine their unique achievements. Which ones most avidly pursued symbolic and subjective meanings in their art? How and why did structure\, optics and order become the obsession of others? In what ways did their combined efforts and aesthetic visions define what would become the modern idiom? Join us as we seek the answers to these questions\, and identify how Post-Impressionism fits into the broad tapestry that is art history.

SUMMARY:Croton Point Park: Westchester’s Jewel on the Hudson
DESCRIPTION:Croton Point Park encompasses miles of Hudson River shoreline with astonishing views and remnants of the region’s past. Ancient shell mounds shed light on the Indigenous peoples who inhabited the area for centuries\, prior to European colonization. Wine cellars from the first commercial vineyard in New York State are hidden in a hillside and discarded bricks from brickyards that helped build Manhattan are scattered on the shore. Although the point served as a dumping ground for much of the twentieth century\, local efforts have restored the park into a model of environmental conservation. Today\, bald eagles have returned to the delight of visitors\, who also explore the remarkable landmarks\, cruise the waters of the Hudson or enjoy scenic picnics. Authors Scott Craven and Caroline Ranald Curvan present the story of Westchester’s crown jewel\, based on their just-published book—available from Arcadia Publishing.

SUMMARY:The Lost Estates of Peekskill
DESCRIPTION:With names such as Mount Florence\, Rest Hill\, and the Beeches\, the hills overlooking Peekskill were once home to magnificent properties with national reputations. Owned by people such as Daniel Craig\, one of the founders of the Associated Press\, the abolitionist Henry Ward Beecher and Moses Sperry Beach\, owner of the New York Sun\, the estates were sites of scandal\, adultery\, and humbug. Join local historian Kirk Moldoff for a look into a little-known aspect of local life in the 1800s. \nThis event is sponsored by Croton Friends of History and will take place in the Ottinger Room of the Croton Free Library. To learn more about Croton Friends of History see our website and follow us on Facebook.

SUMMARY:Revolutionary Walk: Exploring the Battle of Edgars Lane
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Fred Charles\, Revolutionary Hastings Chair \nNiles Jaeger\, Revolutionary Hastings Vice Chair & Hastings Historical Society Trustee \n  \nLocation of program: Revolutionary Walk in Wagner Park\, at the intersection of Broadway and Warburton Avenue (Parking across the street at Zinsser Park\, Edgar’s Lane & Broadway. Also walkable on the OCA to Edgar’s Lane and turn west down to Broadway.) \n  \nThe Old Croton Aqueduct Trailway connects hikers to historic places in each community it passes through.  This outdoor lecture and short walk explores fresh perspectives on the details and context of a Revolutionary battle site near the OCA trail in Hastings. The gradual slope walk (.02 mi each way) will explore the ravine where a significant part of the battle took place. \n  \nOn September 30\, 1778\, along the old Albany Post Road south of Dobbs Ferry (in today’s Hastings-on-Hudson)\, a combined American force consisting of Continental infantry and cavalry carried out a successful ambush on a marauding Hessian patrol\, killing over 15 and taking many prisoners\, without suffering significant losses themselves. The Battle of Edgar’s Lane was a psychological boost for the Continental Army and its only real victory in the so-called “Neutral Ground” of Westchester County throughout the war.  Fred Charles and Niles Jaeger are part of Revolutionary Hastings\, a committee of the Hastings Historical Society formed to create a place to share this local history within the context of the American Revolution and the people who lived here at that time. \n  \nThis program was organized by the NYS Office of Parks\, Recreation\, and Historic Preservation. Space is limited. You can register by going to www.aqueduct.org/events. Contact Laura Compagni\, Educator for the Old Croton Aqueduct State Park\, laura.compagni@parks.ny.gov or 646-670-3947.

SUMMARY:Patriots and Spies in Revolutionary New York with author A.J. Schenkman
DESCRIPTION:Spies! Loyalists! Tories! Conspiracy! Strange messages? Codes in invisible ink? Just in time for Independence Day\, discover stories of the American Revolution! As part of our speaker series\, the Wappingers Historical Society presents A.J. Schenkman\, local historian and author of “Patriots and Spies in Revolutionary New York”\, and several other books pertaining to NYS and Ulster County history. \nThe American Revolution was first and foremost a civil war that tore at the very fabric of families as well as society. Patriots were determined to separate from England\, while Loyalists were just as determined to defeat what they saw as a rebellion. Many do not know that during several critical periods the war was almost fatally undermined by English sympathizers or in some cases opportunistic Patriots. Mr. Schenkman will share some of stories regarding important moments in New York State’s history during the American Revolution. https://www.wappingershistoricalsociety.org/events/speaker-series-patriots-and-spies-in-revolutionary-ny-with-a-j-schenkman \nThe public is invited to attend. WHS member admission is free\, non-member suggested donation of $5.00. Refreshments will be served. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:American Kennel Club Scent Trials at the Museum in Hudson
DESCRIPTION:FASNY Museum of Firefighting\nPhone: (518) 822-1875\nE-Mail: kathy@fasnyfiremuseum.com\nWebsite: https://www.fasnyfiremuseum.com/museum-events/\nAdmission Fee: Day 1: Free\, Day 2: General Admission \nJoin us on May 7th and 8th\, 2022 from 10:00am – 5:00pm for: The American Kennel Club Scent Trials at the Museum! \nAfter the tragic events of 9/11\, there was a push in this country\, due to the increased demand for detection and search and rescue dogs\, to increase focus on scent training and breeding programs domestically. Scent work is a sport that helps nurture and develop scent skills in dogs. Breeders can ‘prove’ their line’s ability to do scent work by earning titles. It is a seriously popular and exciting sport for everyone who trains and competes with their dog. It is also super fun to watch! So join us and the event’s sponsor\, Albany Obedience Club\, as we host American Kennel Club Scent Trials at the Museum. \nThe scent work sport will take place inside and outside of the Museum building\, with as many as 80-90 teams competing during the event! Also during this event\, there will be a canine-inspired Scavenger Hunt in the Museum for kids. Free admission will be offered during the first day of the event (May 7th\, Saturday) from 10:00am – 12:00pm. Museum general admission resumes on day two of the event (May 8th\, Sunday). \nPLEASE NOTE: ONLY CANINES REGISTERED FOR THIS EVENT WILL BE ALLOWED ON THE GROUNDS. \nFree admission to the Museum and the scavenger hunt activity were made possible by a generous grant award from the Museum’s Super Saturdays sponsor: Hudson River Bank and Trust Co. Foundation
