SUMMARY:Call for Artists: Open Call "The Memory of Water"
DESCRIPTION:“The Memory of Water”\nExhibition Dates: Oct. 7 – Nov 22\nWhat does ‘Water’ mean to you? As humans who inhabit bodies made up mostly of water\, we need to connect to water. Water is a necessity\, nourishing\, its beauty inspires\, its recreational\, and an elemental force of nature. Water is an essential ingredient of life\, it is vital to our very existence on this planet. Although water covers 70% of the Earth\, only 3% of this is fresh water. It can be hard to imagine there could be a global water crisis. Yet billions of people experience a lack of available clean water.\nThis exhibit invites artists to respond to Water with a consideration through a local lens\, as a starting point for discussions about its importance as a natural resource. Are you an environmentalist who cherishes the beauty of our region? An activist who wants to help minimize the pollution of water? Do you look at the scientific elements of water? Are you concerned about PFAS chemicals? Have you had an experience or connection to water that you have portrayed through art? Is it the color of water that you are transfixed by or the sound of a river or ocean?\nWe are fortunate to live in a watershed area\, near many lakes\, the Hudson River\, and fairly close to the ocean\, it creates our environment and frames our state of mind. “The Highlands which are within an hour’s drive of New York City and the developed communities of northern New Jersey\, New York\, northwestern Connecticut\, and northeastern Pennsylvania\, is an oasis of green dominated by forests and farmlands; rivers\, lakes and streams; hiking and mountain biking trails; and scenic vistas. This place\, known as “The Highlands”\, is a major source of drinking water for millions of residents in the region. The Highlands is also one of the most ecologically diverse parts of the northeast. The health of the Highlands is important to the health and well-being of millions of residents in the NY\, NJ\, CT and PA region\, resulting in an estimated $913 million in avoided healthcare costs. As local lakes\, scenic vistas\, cultural and historic sites\, and opportunities to fish\, boat\, swim\, camp\, rock climb\, mountain bike\, ski\, and simply enjoy nature provide important opportunities for residents to enjoy the outdoors literally in their backyard; as well as the mental and physical health advantages and improved standard of living in the U.S.” Jim Lyons – Hook Magazine\nIn 2002 an updated study found the Highlands area could be threatened by ecological\, social and economic conditions. How can we be better stewards of our local waterways? Rockland Center for the Arts invites artists to submit artwork exploring “The Memory of Water.”\nOpen to all forms of 2D and 3D art for the wall. Photography\, fiber\, painting\, drawing\, wood\, glass\, ceramic \, metal or mixed media.\nCALENDAR:\nSubmission Deadline: August 25 at 11:59 pm\nAcceptance Notice sent out: September 8\, 2023\nDelivery of Work: Sept. 18 – 23 2023\nExhibition Dates: Oct. 7 – Nov. 22\, 2023\nOpening Reception: Oct. 7\, 2017\, 1-4 pm\nSubmit to: http://www.rocklandartcenter.com/exhibitions\nREQUIREMENTS:\n*Artists must reside within the United States.\n*Media is open to traditional\, mixed media and non-traditional materials. Excluded materials – no freestanding sculptures.\n*Must be for the wall.\n*Pieces must be no larger than 12”w x 24”h and\n*MUST be ready to hang with wire\, cleat or sawtooth armature. Pieces without hanging armature will not be hung.\n*Works mailed should include return postage in a returnable container.\n*Delivery of Work: Sep. 18 – 23\, 2023\n*Pick up of work: MUST be picked up Nov. 27 – Dec. 1\, 2023\nSUBMISSION:\n*Applications can be found at http://www.rocklandartcenter.org http://www.rocklandartcenter.org www.rocklandartcenter.org under the Artists Opportunities tab.\n*Fill out the application and email to roca.opencalls@gmail.com mailto:roca.opencalls@gmail.com mailto:roca.opencalls@gmail.com \, by August 25 at 11:59pm. SUMMARY:Loyalist or Patriot?
DESCRIPTION:Whose side are you on? During the American Revolution\, the Philipses were staunch Loyalists. The Hudson Valley was the site of fierce fighting between the Patriots and the British during the Revolutionary War\, and Westchester County in particular was a contested “neutral zone.” How did people decide where their loyalties lay? Join us for a unique “talk show\,” colonial-style. Meet seven historical people\, including Mary Philipse Morris\, an Algonquian British ally\, a Continental army officer\, and an enslaved woman named Liss\, and learn how and why they decided to stay loyal to the British Crown\, or revolt as Patriots. Time for audience Q&A will follow each performance. Performances held in-person at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm.

SUMMARY:That’s (Not) All She Wrote II - Saturday\, Matinee
DESCRIPTION:That’s (Not) All She Wrote II is a collection of plays and monologues written and performed by eight local women playwrights and WCT members.  The writers will read from their own work in a specially created salon-like setting. \nThis year\, the work by female playwrights needed to ‘pass’ The Bechdel Test\, a method developed in 1985 to evaluate the representation of women in film\, TV\, and theater. Bechdel rules decree that at least two female characters talk to each other about something other than a man. \nThe plays:        \nHunter’s Moon (excerpt) by Barbara Dana\nCluck by Linda Bidwell Delaney\nAssisted Living by Brenda Hettmansberger\nFrom Ballet to the Battlefield by Kimberly Mallory\nSleep Study by Evelyn Mertens\nFilled (a monologue) and Hunger (an excerpt) by Serena Norr\nMother Tree by Loretta Oleck\nA Fashionable Funeral by Bette Carlson Siler

SUMMARY:Hamlet
DESCRIPTION:Elmwood’s Public Domain Players Presents Shakespeare’s Masterpiece\, Hamlet.\nOn July 29\, 2023\, at 3:00 p.m. on ZOOM\nThis famous play is being shortened by using much (but not all) of the text from the First Quarto of Hamlet\, first published in 1603\, rather than a combination of the Second Quarto and the First Folio\, published in 1623\, which is the version that is conventionally used (and is four hours long\, if uncut). The First Quarto\, as well as shortening the text\, also introduces new connections between the characters\, such as Gertrude and Hamlet working together against Claudius. So even if you think you know Hamlet\, tune in for this version that will help you see the play through a new lens.\nContact readings@elmwoodplayhouse.com mailto:readings@elmwoodplayhouse.com for the link.
