SUMMARY:The Felice Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Folk-rock legends the Felice Brothers and singer/songwriter Skullcrusher to perform at the Paramount for the first time EVER on Saturday\, August 6! \nHeadliners the Felice Brothers have toured across the United States and Europe for over a decade\, playing at festivals such as Bonnaroo\, Outside Lands\, Newport Folk\, and England’s End of the Road. They’re down-to-earth road warriors whose talent is matched only by their humility. \nHelen Ballentine – aka Skullcrusher – has spent a lifetime understanding that she looks neither tough nor intense. With wispy blond hair and a delicate frame\, people usually assume she’s sweet\, polite\, smart\, maybe even meek. Ballentine laughs when she recounts being flattened by a soccer ball in fifth grade or the family friends recently tickled by her band name\, Skullcrusher. How could someone so slight and soft\, they wondered\, wield something so heavy and aggressive? Her stinging songwriting belies any fragility of appearance.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: SUMMER OF SOUL
DESCRIPTION:SUMMER OF SOUL\, presented by Garner Arts Center and Rivertown Film \nShowing: Saturday\, August 6\, 8:00 PM\nTitle: Summer of Soul\nYear: 2021\nCountry: USA Genre: Documentary\,Music\nDirector: Amhir Thompson \nView Trailer \nPurchase Tickets Now \nSummer of Soul (… Or\, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised) is a feature documentary about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival\, directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson\, drummer for The Roots and bandleader for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. USA\, 2021\, 118 minutes\, documentary. \nThis film marks Thompson’s feature directorial debut and focuses on the outdoor festival in Harlem’s Mount Morris Park that took place the same summer as the famed Woodstock festival and boasted an attendance on par with that concert 100 miles away. It featured dozens of extraordinary performances by artists including Stevie Wonder\, Sly and the Family Stone\, Nina Simone\, B.B. King\, the Staple Singers\, the 5th Dimension\, David Ruffin\, Mahalia Jackson and Gladys Knight and the Pips. Over 300\,000 people attended\, yet it received virtually no coverage from the mainstream media. The 40 hours of never-seen-before footage was originally shot by the late television pioneer Hal Tulchin\, but has largely remained in storage for the past 50 years\, keeping this incredible event in America’s history lost – until last year. \nTickets on sale HERE. $10 general admission. $8 for members and tenants of Garner Arts Center\, seniors\, students\, veterans\, and members of Rivertown Film (Rivertown members\, use the discount code RIVMEM). \nWinner of the 2022 Academy Award for Documentary Film\, a Grammy for Best Music Film\, a Peabody Arts Award\, a BAFTA Award for Best Documetary\, an Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary\, the Sundance Grand Jury Prize\, and was named Best Documentary of 2021 by the National Board of Review. \n“Watching Summer of Soul\, what you experience is nothing less than the sound of freedom.” – Variety \n“Best Film of the Year” – The New York Times \n“Summer of Soul is both a tribute to the artists and\, just as importantly\, their audience — which is what makes it not just a great concert film but a great documentary\, period.” – Rolling Stone \n“Some of the performances are breathtaking\, and all of them are valuable\, like the political and social context that surrounds them.” – Wall Street Journal
