Indian Brook Falls

The view: A small, picturesque waterfall and lagoon ideal for wading. Set in gorge surrounded by forest land. A good place to take kids or your best gal.

The hike: Trail to the waterfall follows the brook upstream. Erosion has claimed parts of the trail and some parts of the path require steep up and down hiking. From the parking area, it's a quarter-mile walk to the waterfall.

History: Story goes that a member of Henry Hudson's crew, Jacobus Van Horen, was captured by Indians in the Garrison area. Princess Manteo, daughter of the local chief, saw Van Horen, fell in love with him and pleaded for his life. He was given to her and their marriage was planned for the following year. He was allowed to roam freely in the area. One day when the couple were swimming in the pool below the falls, Van Horen spotted a European ship on the Hudson. He bolted for the ship, leaving being his Indian fiancee. Some say Van Horen murdered her to escape, others say the distraught princess took her own life by hurling herself over the falls.

Directions: Located on the east side of the Hudson River between Garrison and Cold Spring. Going north on NY 9D, outside of Garrison you'll cross over a white bridge (Indian Brook is below). After the bridge take the second left -- Indian Brook Road. Follow this one-half mile to a t-intersection. At that intersection you'll find a well-marked parking area (6-8 cars). From the lot, head east up the road to the trail crossing Indian Brook. Follow the trail upstream about a quarter-mile to the waterfall.

Note: Don't miss the nearby Constitution Marsh Sanctuary. It's a about a half-mile walk downstream from the parking lot. Features a boardwalk through the marsh, nice nature center and hiking trails. It's managed by the National Audubon Society.
