The grants are part of more than $1 million in Hudson River Estuary grants for 37 projects aimed at promoting tourism, while protecting and improving the river and its tributaries, and will provide $80,000 in funding to study Yonkers scenic vistas and future planning by the city. The Beczak Environmental Center will receive $20,278 to help expand the educational outreach programs offered by the Center, which is located in Yonkers. The Hudson River Estuary Program, funded through the state's Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) provided grants to qualifying municipalities and not-for-profit corporations across New York. The initiative was designed to establish partnerships with community-based organizations by funding local projects that contribute to the river's renewal and protection along the Hudson River Estuary. The grants are the second series of grants awarded under the Estuary Program. In 2000 Governor George Pataki awarded nearly $1.2 million in grants for 33 projects. "These valuable grants will help ensure that Yonkers can take full advantage of a tremendous environmental resource right in our own backyard," said Assemblyman Spano.
