Visit the River Town's 10 most popular attractions

In September and October of 2002, you can take advantage of our Dine & Discover program, which offers special gifts and bonuses at leading restaurants when visiting one of the attractions below before you dine. It’s a great way to combine education, entertainment and a great meal. It’s also worth doing more than once!

Our historic attractions include estates of the internationally-famous, farms and mills run the way they were more than 200 years ago, a home occupied by the same family for nearly 250 years and a museum treasure-trove of objects from the Hudson’s past and present. There’s even a river cruise, plus entertaining and dramatic performances in historic theaters.

Upon admission, you’ll be given a Dine & Discover certificate that you can take to 19 leading restaurants for valuable gifts and bonuses when you dine with them.

Gifts and special offerings vary, ranging from complimentary appetizers, desserts, wine or other drinks to specially-priced dishes or meals. Full information can be found on the “Dine & Discover” certificate.

1. Hudson River Museum, Yonkers
Home to the Andrus Planetarium and Glenview, a 24-room mansion in classic Gothic/Renaissance style listed on the National Register, the museum is a “must see” in its own right. It has a fine permanent collection, intriguing revolving exhibits and frequent concerts and cultural programs, plus a wild Red Grooms -decorated gift shop. 2. Kykuit, Tarrytown (The Rockefeller Estate)
A splendid Hudson River villa with spectacular river views — centerpiece of a 250-acre estate. See great formal and informal gardens, the Japanese garden, greenhouse, collection of classic autos and carriages, view Nelson Rockefeller’s imposing art collection in the subterranean galleries. Then tour the Georgian Revival home of the notable American family that lived here for four generations. Call 914-631-9491

3. Lyndhurst, Tarrytown
Often considered our country’s finest Gothic Revival home, this castle-like mansion sits on 67 beautifully landscaped acres riverside acres and was home to three notable American families. A National Trust property, with 40 rooms, a soaring tower, arched ceilings, parqueted floors, colonnaded arches, original furnishings and precious artwork, its greenhouse was once the largest in the US. 4. The Music Hall, Tarrytown
Westchester's first theater and one of the river town’s most interesting structures, built in 1885. It has hosted minstrel shows, fairs, balls, graduations, concerts, operas, motion pictures, vaudeville, flower shows, even basketball games and roller skating. Early stars here were Charlie Chaplin, Mabel and Fatty Arbuckle, Recent concerts have included everybody from Robert Goulet to Spyro Gyra. Call 914-631-3390

5. NY Waterway Cruises, Tarrytown
The North Hudson Cruise is offered May-October on weekends and holidays at 1:15pm The narrated route passes Peekskill and the Bear Mountain Bridge, with food and drink available. You’ll see the river towns and the west bank from a unique vantage point and hear the fascinating history of one of our country’s most storied and legendary areas. Call 800-533-3779

6. Paramount Center for the Arts, Peekskill
Built in 1930 as a state-of-the-art movie palace with a Tudor exterior and neoclassic interior, the Paramount Theater has been a river town cultural focus for nearly 75 years. A showplace home for classic films, live music, stand-up comedy, theater performances and local events, the art deco marquee was recently restored with 2,040 bulbs. 7. Philipsburg Manor, Sleepy Hollow
Step across the millpond bridge into a thriving mid-18th century Dutch Colonial trading center and farm which was operated by enslaved Africans. It was one of two milling centers established by Frederick Philpse in the 1650s. See a working water-powered gristmill and 17th-Century smokehouse, watch live demonstrations of colonial activities, and enjoy the oxen, cows and sheep that roam the grounds. Call 914-631-3992

8. Sunnyside, Tarrytown (Washington Irving's Home)
This home truly defines the magic and mystery of the Hudson River Valley. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow author designed this romantic riverfront home “as full of crooked corners as a cocked hat” in 1835, with woodland walks and stunning river views. This “little snuggery on the Hudson” contains many treasures brought home from Irving’s world travels. Call 914-591-8763

9. Union Church of Pocantico Hills, Tarrytown
This small stone country house of worship contains nine stained glass windows by Marc Chagall (his only cycle of church windows in the US) and a rose window by Henri Matisse (the final work completed before his death in 1954). The priceless, rare windows were commissioned by members of the Rockefeller family and each tells an important biblical story or is a family member memorial. Call 914-631-2069

10. Van Cortlandt Manor, Croton
A unique American treasure, occupied by one family for nearly 250 years and filled with exceptional original furnishings. Visit an 18th century tavern, a tenant farmer’s house, and roam the grounds along the Croton River. Costumed demonstrations of open-hearth cooking, blacksmithing, brickmaking and other colonial activities help bring the post Revolutionary War era to life. Call 914-271-8981
